When to prune blackberries
Prune blackberries while the plants are dormant in winter, and again in summer to tip canes, with the exact months tied to your region's frost dates.
The window: Dormant pruning in Jan–Feb (FF/PF), summer tipping in June–July (FF), and post-harvest floricane removal in Aug–Oct (FF/PF); for single-cropping systems, cut all canes to the ground in late fall or winter after the primocane crop harvest.
- Prune while the plants are dormant during the winter.
- Cut the tops of primocanes to just below the dead portion that produced in the previous year.
- Shorten any long or crossing lateral branches.
- Tie canes to the trellis wire.
The mistake to avoid: For single-cropping systems, cut all canes to the ground in the late fall or winter following the primocane crop harvest, and remove them from the field.
